The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is set to shut down on Monday 30th June 2025. This could affect customers on tariffs with different rates for peak and off-peak times, especially if you rely on electric storage heaters for heating or hot water.
If your meter uses the RTS signal and isn’t updated before the shutdown, your heating and hot water may stop working properly. For example, it could stay on all the time, stop working when needed, or charge at the wrong times. To avoid these issues, it’s important to switch to a new meter in advance.
What you need to do
Contact your electricity supplier as soon as possible. They should help you switch to a smart meter, which will allow you to continue using off-peak electricity rates. If your supplier cannot install a smart meter yet, they should let you know when an appointment becomes available.
If you’re struggling to arrange a meter upgrade, the Energy Ombudsman is available to help. They offer free, impartial advice and can assist in resolving problems with your supplier. You can reach them by calling 0333 300 1620.
Don’t wait until the last minute - act now to ensure your heating and hot water continue to work smoothly.
